Murbella – Day 1 – Driver Side Axle Removal

Posted on 2020-04-062020-04-06

So today’s work was to get the driver side axle removed. This was accomplished. However, this proved to be a bit more difficult than I expected due to one of the CVJ bolts getting a bit stripped and then, also realizing I’ll need yet another tool to remove the actual joint from the axle itself….

I found an Ohio transaxle rebuilder!!!

Posted on 2020-04-06

I had some no-go emails this morning and then, finally, a positive response on rebuilding Murbella’s transaxle!!! Jim’s Custom VW’s about 180 miles from here in Columbiana, OH got back to me this morning! This is a massive load of worry off my shoulders. I really didn’t want to have to crate up the trans…

Transaxle Dilemma

Posted on 2020-04-05

I’m still not having much luck in finding someone in Ohio (or at least sane driving distance from central Ohio) who can repair or perform an entire rebuild of Murbella’s transaxle. Now her 2nd gear synchro has been bad since I bought her and she occasionally pops out of gear or generally is difficult to…

Murbella – Day 0 – Basic Inspection

Posted on 2020-04-05

Now that she’s up on stands I went ahead and did a basic inspection and captured some before removal pics. Engine and Trans Her engine is exactly where I left it last year when the fuel started spraying down from somewhere on the Cylinder 1/2 head. I am assuming it is one of the o-rings…

I think all my parts are sourced and ready.

Posted on 2020-04-042020-04-04

So I finally got around unpacking and sorting everything I recently purchased. As a general preparation step, I always unpack everything and try to go over what shipped. I count bolts and nuts and washers to ensure everything is proper and depending on what the auto project entails, I will restort the parts into bins…

Almost ready to being work.

Posted on 2020-04-04

So the kid got the 2nd Jetta engine installed and it was running. However, now it appears to have 2 dead cylinders or something related to the head gasket. It wasn’t like he did any real proper cleaning of that short block so who knows if it is related to his negligence or that he…

Biding my time while the Jetta GLI gets rebuilt

Posted on 2020-03-282020-03-28

So while I am not confined to work-at-home due to the COVID19 virus quarantine in our state, and even though all of the parts I ordered finally arrived to allow me to being the work on Murbella, my son changed his mind on his blown up Jetta GLI and has decided to rebuild that engine….

Murbella? Add some color to her seat covers?

Posted on 2020-03-13

So from what I can tell, Murbella’s driver seat and rear seat have the original covers on them. However, her passenger seat has had a bit of fraying in the vinyl since before I bought her. When I bought her, her prior owner gave me a new seat cover he had purchased but it never…

Fun with sourcing parts.

Posted on 2020-03-122020-04-06

So I decided to take advantage of 2 stores’ sales to get the bulk of what I need for my 2020 Murbella work. Ultimately I ended up having to source from 4 stores since I wanted a better solution for the future rear brake lines. I got the bulk of my parts from California Import…
