Murbella – Day 0 – Basic Inspection

Posted on 2020-04-05

Now that she’s up on stands I went ahead and did a basic inspection and captured some before removal pics.

Engine and Trans

Her engine is exactly where I left it last year when the fuel started spraying down from somewhere on the Cylinder 1/2 head. I am assuming it is one of the o-rings on the injectors or one of the small hoses that are there but I will not really be able to see it clearly until the engine is removed and I can see it all form the side.

1979 FI VW Engine

I realize I need to get a fresh set of black wires. I really dislike the yellow ones I had put on her when I tuned her up in 2017.

Will definitely be better as black.

I would really like to find someone who refurbs distributors.  Not sure what I can do to clean up the vac can.

Still getting oil drips

I’m shocked that I am still getting oil drips around the strainer. I even shifted to a silicon gasket in the hopes that would make a difference but it never did.

Cylinder 3/4 Exhaust manifold

Heat exchanger / Muffler connection

I’m going to need to be extra careful with these parts and their removal. I am not sure what kind of gasket needs to go here either. Something I had forgotten about for this,

Cylinder 1/2 side exhaust manifold

I want all of these to be media blasted and ceramic powder coated so they’ll last for years to come

I’m surprised how bad the casting marks are on this cage

I haven’t decided if I’m going to try to replace the oil pump or not. I have one on hand but still not sure if I should or not.

EGR Filter connection

So some previous owner just chopped the EGR filter off and then crimped both the main connection and the connections at the muffler.

EGR Muffler Connection

I plan on putting an EGR filter back on the car so hopefully I can just remove both areas that were crimped and fit the new filter and additional tube once everything is powder coated.

Where is my thermostat?

Once thing I never realized is that the engine obviously has been taken out before since the thermostat is missing. The flaps are no doubt missing too which kind of angers me. I don’t know why I haven’t noticed over the past 3 years but I have never really shoved cameras up here.

Cylinder 3/4 tins and push rod tubes.

I’m going to have to be extremely careful with all of the engine tins since FI tins are not made in the aftermarket. There are distinct differences between pre-FI and FI tins and with so fewer FI Beetles made I don’t even want to try to have to track down replacements.
