Getting the AE engine working and swapped.

Posted on 2019-02-082019-02-08

There are a lot of incomplete sub-tasks of the various ongoing projects at the moment. Ohio winter has made me not want to work on anything really. I’ve got the AH engine rebuild going on, the AR engine tear-down and prep, the tear down of all that last minute 1302/1303 suspension stuff, as well as…

Years away… but thinking… interiors.

Posted on 2019-02-082019-02-08

I know I’m years away from needing to make final decisions but I’ve been thinking of interior colors. I’m pretty sure that if I keep stock style seats for I’ll just end up going with Project Żuczek I’ll end up going fully with a Sewfine interior. Hell, even if I end up changing the front seats…

The 47 year old spindles are finally free of the struts!

Posted on 2019-02-06

So I’ve been working on those 1302 front struts and spindles off and on for weeks and was making zero progress in separately the spindle off the damn strut bottom. No amount of heat, soaking, whacking, etc. that I could do with my tools in my garage made a difference. We got the gland nuts…

Some OPP Progress

Posted on 2019-02-04

I managed to make some progress in the garage today. I tackled those 1303 struts. I got the springs off. None of it too difficult. Front brakes all separated well and I’ve salvaged the backing plates to see if anyone wants them. Of course, I turned my focus back to the 1302 struts and didn’t…

Guess what? More snow!

Posted on 2019-02-01

Woke up to about 5″ of snow everywhere. However the temps were in the low 20s (°F) today. Believe me… I don’t think any of expected to wake up to this today. What’s so bad crazy is that Sunday we are supposed to be over 52°F. That will literally be a 50° difference in less…

ATS Cup Alloy Wheels in the US?

Posted on 2019-01-31

So I was putzing around some European vendors looking for fenders and came across wheels I don’t think I really ever noticed before on any cars (in pics or in life). The ATS Cup alloy wheels appear to be various sizes and widths with a 4 x 100 pattern. Not quite 4 x 130 but…

To flare or not to flare. That is the question.

Posted on 2019-01-30

So I love Super Beetles with slightly flared and widened fenders/wings. I love the way a wider set of slightly lowered tires sits back under them, hugging the ground and generally making the 1303 (and even the 1302’s) seem just that much more robust. I’ve looked at some of the US vendors and some of…

Way in the past before he was Żuczek Brzęczyszczykiewicz.

Posted on 2019-01-29

It is still rather shocking for me to think that Żuczek rolled off the assembly line in Germany looking like the above pic. I mean… literally the above pic. Marina Blue. Sun Roof. Stock wheels. Unfortunately, unlike the infographic, he was born an autostick and not the manual he is now.

The wheels on the 1302 go round and round.

Posted on 2019-01-272019-01-27

So I came across an image of a modded basic stock steel wheel off of the 2012 and later Beetles that I kind of actually like. The 2012 and later stock basic steel wheels used on a variety of VW models are pretty much the same as the ones on the MARK IV ones with…

On custom auto rotisseries.

Posted on 2019-01-262019-01-26

So I’m checking in with one of my favorite FB Groups, VW Body, Metal, Interior Work DIYers, and one of the contributors Shawn Mielke posted some pics of his custom made Type 1 auto rotisserie and quite frankly it looks like it would be simple to duplicate and mod a bit for 1302/1303 use.     Knowing…
