2020 New Build - Case Preparation

Murbella – Day 42 – New case prep and cleaning!

Posted on 2020-06-16

So today was all about prepping the new case and making sure some of the basic tolerances are there as well as some of the problems I found yesterday get fixed. The as I do with all prior builds, I need to mod the case just slightly to allow for the use of double-thrust cam…

2020 New Build - 0 Mile Case

Murbella – Day 41 – New case arrived!

Posted on 2020-06-15

Engine – Day 5 Initial Case Inspection The new case arrived today and it is a VW Brazil Universal Case. I wasn’t quite sure what it would be as not all vendors really clearly indicate what the source of their basic stock cases are. I’ll say this. There is not a whole lot of clean…

Reference: End play stuff!

Posted on 2020-06-122020-06-12

I had a whole lot of end play measuring issues on the 2019 New Build and I do not want to repeat them so I’m going to go over a bunch of people’s different info on setting end play, and will likely attempt to determine the shim sizing with the crank during build assembly, much…

Engine Building - Remains

Murbella – Day 38 – Balancing pistons and rods

Posted on 2020-06-09

Engine – Day 3 So I was generally happy with how close the weights were with the pistons and rods. I spent about 45 minutes removing what little material needed to come off of a couple of them all to balance out the weight. I decided the best place to remove material was a thicker…

2020 AJ Engine Rebuild

Murbella – Day 35 – Engine internals weigh-in!

Posted on 2020-06-06

Engine – Day 2 When I build my engines, I’m aiming to meet basic VW tolerances as well as some other things I’ve learned from reading about engine building from the high-performance world. While I would love every engine to have a completely balanced internal crankshaft with a balanced flywheel, that is just not practical…

1979 VW Beetle - AJ Bore Inspection

Murbella – Day 35 – It needs align bored.

Posted on 2020-06-062020-06-06

So I set about torquing the case halves together to get some bore measurements. While overall things look round, even if I figure my measurements are just slightly off (due to user error), there is some variations in 1, 2, and 3 main and I didn’t even bother to look at 4. I see no…

1979 VW Beetle - AJ Bore Inspection

Murbella – Engine – Day 1 – Too much play.

Posted on 2020-06-052020-06-05

Yeah. I am pretty sure the case can’t be built as-is without being machined. So much for having a week off to build the long block. Best case scenario… needs align bored. Worst case scenario… case is warped internally and is trash. And if that’s the situation, Murbella is no longer numbers matching.

1979 VW Beetle - FI AJ Engine

Murbella – AJ Engine – Day 1

Posted on 2020-06-05

I started the bearing work today, making sure that the oil passages conform to the bearings oil holes, as well as doing a small mod to the thrust bear cam saddle to allow for the tang of a double-thrust bearing to fit. The Silverline set of double thrust cam bearings basically duplicates 2 identical thrust…

Murbella – Day 31 – AJ Engine Rebuild Starts

Posted on 2020-05-312020-06-03

So I suppose I can officially consider the first day of the engine rebuild since I always mark Day 1 with the post last cleaning plugging of the case! (We’ll just pretended everything to this day was Day 0!) AJ Engine Rebuild, Day 1 The case was cleaned one final time with some soapy water…

Murbella – Day 30 – Cleaning, Painting, More…

Posted on 2020-05-302020-05-30

So while I had intended to drop her top so I could easily have access to undoing the shifting rod from the transmission as well as using her interior for storage space, I ran into a slight problem that I did not foresee. With her up on stands, there’s absolutely no way to clear the…
