So all the remaining key long block parts arrived today. I can start putting some order to chaos in terms of the parts bins, make sure everything is easily accessible as needed, etc.

So I’ve gone with the 4140 Forged Counterweighted Crankshaft VW Journal crank for the rebuild. If I lived in southern California, I probably would have had her original VW forged crank modded to have counter-weights and reused it but I opted to go new, and to store her original away. Going with the new crank meant shifting to a 8 dowel configuration, so I added a basic 8-dowel lightened flywheel to the order. This crank normally runs $305.95 but with that sale that was running this one was only $232.00 so I opted for forged instead of cast.

Since the sale was quite decent, I opted for these forged 5.394″ Chromoly I Beam Connecting Rods which were pretty much $8 more than comparable new basic ones from other vendors.

I am really looking forward to just a slight bit of improvement from the upgrade to the CB Performance 2280 cam. I’ve talked to enough people about adding this to an FI Beetle that I feel confident there should be no negatives with everything else essentially remaining stock.

The fanned alt pulley will hopefully ensure that the new 90amp alternator does not get too hot. Given that the FI engine’s run a bit hotter than carbed engines, and that this is also a convertible that runs a bit hotter, I figured every bit under the decklid that could help should be there.
Now yes, this changes the appearance from stock, and I committed to that slight change for the potential benefits. I bought the one black stock-looking crank pulley to match this.

I bought a set of 1.1.1 rebuilt stock rockers as well. Ultimately, the plan is to clean up her originals and reuse them. These were bought for initial running and eventually for attempting the HVMX oil flow cutting mods.

Something that I should have had a long time ago.
I hate to think of that fuel line break, with all the high-pressure gasoline shooting all over, would have caused a fire. I would not have been able to remotely act fast enought.

Oh Amazon. Couldn’t you have really used a smaller box???
