1979 VW Beetle - Rear Bumper Mount

Murbella – Day 30 – Oil Filter Placement

Posted on 2020-05-30

If this becomes too difficult to do, given my fabrication limitations, I’ll just go with the stock oil pump and skip full filtering for now.

Buried under that oh so lovely undercoating is the shock bumper mount and bolts.

I need to figure out a way to mod a mounting plate that is made for 68-73 flat rear bumper mounts to the rounded style 74 and later ones.

Now if I had the ability to cut and drill metal and weld it all together this would be easy.

I could just make piece that would fit over the rounded part, with holes drilled in to allow slightly longer bolds to hold both the plate in and the bumper. I could then just weld the EMPI piece to that plate (keeping the top 3 hold pattern for the filter part) and then install it all.

Of course, I can’t do any kind of fabbing or welding so I’m shit out of luck right now.

This is not the end all and be all here.

Full filtering was not in scope, as I did not want to destroy an original FI tin to make space for the 90 degree out.

It wasn’t until I found that I could accomplish this with the CBPerformance Maxi Pump 3 that I gave it serious thought.
