1979 VW Beetle - FI AJ Code Engine Parts

Murbella – Day 19 – A bit of a pain in the ass!

Posted on 2020-05-172020-05-19

So on the FI engine, as you’ve seen from my prior disassembly posts, the older style generator stand/oil filler combo unit does not exist. Occupying the same space as that (to allow for the oil hole), as well as a good portion of where the carb would be is the full plenum/throttle body assembly.

It is actually quite a massive unit taking up most of the front of the fan shroud with the two intake manifolds connecting to it on either side via the manifold boots.

This assembly serves as the alternator stand and with the addition of the side plastic oil filler, more or less is the 1:1 space equivalent of those same parts on a Pre-1975 US engine.

What would be the two rear alternator stand bolts are proving to be a major pain in the ass to remove.

I’m probably going to have to degunk the area.

This is the last major piece I want off before I remove the clutch and flywheel and get it on the stand.
