1979 Beetle - Passenger Side Axle - Wheel CVJ

Murbella – Day 2 – Passenger Side Axle Removal

Posted on 2020-04-072020-04-07

So I did manage to get out again this evening and got the passenger side axle removed.

The condition of this axle is far worse than the driver side.

The axle is far dirtier than the driver side and the bolts and washers were far more crusted into the boot housing.

As with the driver side, the rubber boots since solid though very dirty.

The wheel side CV Joint seems to be on par with the other 2 from the driver side. The grease is old and dirty and still rather viscous.

The trans side CV Joint is an entire other story.

Once I had removed the bolts enough to pull the joint away liquid grease stared to pour downwards. I am assuming that this grease is polluted with water or some levels of moisture.

It is like Hershey’s chocolate syrup. So different from the other 3 joints.

On the first inspection both boots seem fine so I’m not sure what is going on with the axle side joint’s grease and why it is so different. Sure it is very old but I expected it to be generally the same for all 4.

I was already very filthy and covered and greasy dirt so I’ll save the disassembly for tomorrow.
