AS41 Engine – Installing more of the stock setup

Posted on 2019-10-19
AS41 Build - These gaskets don't fit very well do they?
These gaskets really don’t fit well

Since I am now down to just wanting to get the engine running and installed into Żuczek, I am no longer really concerned about appearances anymore.

I did not bother to repaint the stock intake that came off the AE engine. It really needed a bit of work as well as some extra metal added to the 3-4 pre-heat flange but I installed it as is.

The gaskets that I am pretty such came from the Elring kit really don’t fit all that well. There seems to be more material than necessary. I’m just leaving them as is since I don’t have time (or the care right now) to make these perfect.

I used some basic stainless bolts, washers, and thinner jam nuts to get these down. There is not a whole lot of clearance on the inner holes at all to get those screwed down so the thinner jam nut fit rather well.

It is really rather sad I am resorting to putting this basic stock setup back on. I really hate how cluttered this intake is. The dual carbs really make more overall space and create a cleaner engine bay. I just have always kind of hated the 70’s era stock carb setup that had more or less taken over every bit of space, not to mention how much the 73-74 air filter takes up.

Since I had no plans on this engine to go to a stock setup, I hadn’t planned to send off my original Solex 34 Pict 3 to Volksbitz until I was ready to use it on an engine. It has 45 years of use on it and really needs a total rebuilt like only he can do.

So… I just bought a basic generic 34 Pict 3 to throw on it. I could have spent a bit more for the Euromax or EMPI one, but since they are all clones and from China I just don’t think there’s going to be all that much different in performance. I mean, all I read is how they are all crap anyway so we’ll see.

So cluttered

It really is cluttered but it is all back on.

I need to tighten everything down and get some washer’s on the J-Tube connections that I’ve yet to get to.

I need to make a new wire connection for the cut-off solenoid and the choke though I haven’t figured out what guage the wire needs to be.

As of right now I’m just using the crappy EMPI aftermarket air filter. I can put the AH engine’s massive filter unit, or even the AE engine’s oil bath air filter if I need to.

I don’t plan on driving the car much with this engine right now. It is just for moving it and of course, was the experiment to learn to build and engine.

Tomorrow I’ll see if I can get it running with this set-up.
