And the case was cracked open!
All kinds of surprises inside, at least in terms of what’s there.
I already knew the crank is probably not stock given the fact is is 8-dowel drilled. I’m thinking it might be an original that was rebuilt and modded given the VW logo on it. Need to research more.
The con rods are all VW originals so probably rebuilt as well.
I was not expecting a flat cam gear but there it is. I need to figure out what kind of cam it is, Could be stock from an earlier era engine. Could be mildly better. Who knows. But remember… I felt the engine was damn fast and peppy when driving on the freeway!
The lifters don’t appear to have too much wear on them.
I’m trying to keep track of everything so if I reuse them they’ll go into the right spot where they are married to the cam lobes.
I haven’t cleaned them of oil yet so I can’t tell if that is wear on the camshaft bearings or what. Nice to see a double thrust one in there. That’s all I want in my engines from now on.
I am hoping there is nothing wrong with the case, and the bearing saddles are all sound. That said, I am not yet sure how to measure to determine if the bearing saddles are in fact not standard size due to prior machining.
More research on that… and micrometer fun!
So here’s the other side of that cam plug with all the silicone around it!
