Reference: FI Engine – Air Intake Diagram

Posted on 2020-05-112020-05-11

UPDATE:  I was sent to https://volkswagen.7zap.com/ which uses the same data but is a far better site than the nemigaparts.com one mentioned below.

So as I was scouring the internets for any data I could gather on VW’s implementation of the Bosch L-Jetronic FI system on the Beetles I stumbled across nemigaparts.com which seems to just have tons of parts references and diagrams for vehicles from all major makes and models.

It was here I stumbled upon this diagram of the US Type 1 FI air intake system, with some parts references as well as some blown apart drawings that quite frankly I did not realized existed. I have never come across this diagram before.

This is quite simply fantastic and while not a complete diagram, the general detail surpasses others.

The page where the diagram is from also has the key for a lot of the original part numbers and descriptions, something that I rarely fine with diagrams of this nature.

Now one thing that really shocked me, and something I previously did not notice when looking at the engine, is that hidden under so much other equipment, the air intake body actually appears to be 3 separate pieces.

The FI engine’s alternator stand seems to be 1/2 of the entire intake (part 1) married at a gasket to driver side part (part 2) with the air intake/throttle body part (part 3) attached at the top and married with yet another gasket.

Of course, all of my gaskets are 41 years old and the majority of this is not available.  The gasket in the diagram (#21) is the on that I am most concerned about. I am betting I could make a new one but the path is pretty complicated.

Now I may not need one. I had no idea this was multiple parts until I saw the diagram. But damn if this doesn’t both help to to visualize everything as well as scare me realizing there’s so much no longer around.

The key thankfully lists the part #s, and another great thing on this site is that for bolts and such the sizes are clearly listed.

It is so much easier for me to quickly search something like this than hope to find the exact data I need in the Bentley or other manuals.

I am so very happy I found this site and these pages.
