So. What to powder coat? That is the question.

Posted on 2020-05-06

So as I’ve written, I’ve been back and forth on what vendor to have blast what parts, not to mention what to powder coat and what not to powder coat.

I’ve decided that I’ll likely powder coat more parts than originally planned.

So. Tentatively this is what’s going to happen:

Ceramic Powder Coating

I will try to match the original general color of the parts if possible, even that pastel yellow of the exhaust manifolds.

  • Heat Exchangers x 2
  • Exhaust Manifolds x 2
  • Exhaust Tubes x 2
  • Original Muffler (tentative depending on blasting results)

Basic Powder Coating

I will try to match the basic aluminum gray.

  • 2 intake manifolds

Spray Paint

I will aim at 2-3 coats of paint and then 2-3 top coats of satin finish.

  • FI engine tins
  • EGR pipes/pieces
  • Throttle Body

Obviously, plans will change as pieces and parts are removed.

I am so hoping I can disassemble the tins without screw issues. I have yet to successfully remove push rod tube under tins without problems due to the way the heat, grime, and overall age have fused parts together.

I am hoping the exhaust components all remove well, given past experience with heat exchangers has proven iffy. Thankfully, the FI versions all have flanges that should hopefully make removal easier. There’s no press fittings like in the carb exhausts.

One thing for sure, I will definitely be using penetrating fluids before I attempt to unscrew anything. I need to snag a few propane tubes as well to have on hand. I cannot risk any damage to these parts or pieces.
