1979 VW Beetle - Driver Side - Stub Axle Debris

Murbella – Day 7 – Stub Axle spacer drama!

Posted on 2020-04-15

So when I got the stub axle out of the bearing housing the other day the inner spacer came out with it.

Now I don’t mean just out with it… i mean really out with it!

The spacer will not budge at all.

I’ve been soaking the stub axle for days in mineral spirits to get all that grime off the CV connection point. I had hoped this would possibly help with the space removal but no can do.

I put it in the vise and tried to get the spacer to move a bit but zilch on that front.

So. Heat.

I started heating it up hoping to make some basic progress with the removal but nope, it is on there way tight.

I kept heating it but it just is not making a difference yet.

It is coated with penetrating lube and hopefully this will get into any open seams and make a difference.

I’ll check again tomorrow.

Perhaps I’ll be a bit rougher this time. I’m not good at doing that yet with old parts.
