1979 VW Beetle - Passenger Axle Disassembly

Murbella – Day 3 – Passenger Side Axle Disassembly

Posted on 2020-04-08

The passenger side axle is in a lot worse shape than the drive side. It required a lot more work to get the boots off but eventually it broke apart.

I did a basic degrease to be able to handle all this but I’m not touching any more of the boots or the outer CV housings as they would take more work than I want to put in.

The axle drive shaft has lost a lot of original coating, and is actually far rustier than the driver side.

Too much boot gunk!

Wear pattern

The worst CV joint is definitely the axle side one, with wear patterns on almost every surface and some rust due to moisture penetration into the grease.

I’m definitely going with new CV joints.
